Middletown is a historic neighborhood located in eastern Jefferson County, Kentucky, about 12 miles east of downtown Louisville. Middletown is believed to be one of the oldest settlements in the county, dating back to the early 18th century when it was first settled by pioneers. The area was originally known as “Smith’s Station” and was a popular stop for travelers on their way to Lexington.
The neighborhood’s name changed to “Middletown” in 1825 when the Louisville and Lexington Turnpike was built and the town was located in the middle of the route. Middletown remained a small, rural community until the mid-20th century when suburban growth began to take hold in the area.
